Hayes Family

John Hayes and Mary Ellen Casey immigrated to Canada from Ireland
where they settled in Toronto and bought a farm. It's possible that
John Hayes and Mary Ellen Casey were married in Ireland. The exact
place of birth for John Hayes has not been determined. However, the
birthplace for Mary Ellen Casey was the parish of Bruff, Co. Limerick,
Ireland. It is possible that John Hayes was from the same area,
although this is just speculation. There was no record of there marriage
in the St. Paul's parish records from 1864 to 1868.

The exact date of death for John Hayes has not been determined,
most probably between 1883 - 1892. After the death of John, Mary
Ellen sold the farm and bought a grocery store with rooms and living
quarters in the rear of the building. This is where she raised her family.
She also may have purchased several other building and possibly a tavern
while living in Canada.

Note: All of the above children of John Hayes and Mary Ellen Casey
were born in Toronto,Canada. There birth dates and baptism records
are documented in the St. Paul's Church Parish records, Toronto, Canada.
(LDS Film # 1305633).

It's been reported that John Hayes and Mary Ellen Casey had only 8 children.
The list of children given to me listed only 8. The name of Michael Hayes was
included on the list. During this research I found the records for a John J. Hayes,
son of John Hayes and Mary Ellen Casey, this name was not on the list.
No records were found for Michael Hayes in the St. Paul's parish records.
It is possible that over the years the names may have been mixed, and that the
name Michael is a middle or nickname for John ,James, or Thomas Hayes.

1871 Canadian Dominion Census

Toronto, Ontario St. David

The table below is a extract from the 1871 Canadian Census documenting
John Hayes and family. It is worth noting that at the time of this census the
family had a border by the name of Catherine McCarthy. The name of
Mrs. McCarthy is recorded on the Baptismal Certificate for Mary Hayes, born 1878.
Mrs. McCarthy may be related to the Hayes family in some way, or she may have
been a very close friend of the family.

Name Sex Age Place of Birth Religion Origin Occupation Married or Widowed
John Hayes Male 31 Ireland Catholic Irish Laborer M
Mary Female 25 Ireland Catholic Irish - M
Maggie Female 3 Canada Catholic Irish - -
Annie Female 1 Canada Irish - -
Catherine McCarthy Female 40 Ireland Catholic Irish - W

The address for this census was not specified on the actual census report. The only
reference to a location was "St. David". St. David in the year 1871 was a district
or a Township in Toronto. There was also a street in Toronto called St. David. The exact
meaning of "St. David" on this census is not known. From the table above, the
approximate year of birth for John and Mary Hayes is 1840 and 1846 respectively.
However, based on the 1900 U.S. Federal Census, the year of birth for Mary is recorded
as 1852 (see Walsh section), and the 1910 U.S. Federal Census gives her year of birth as
1854. Which record is most accurate is difficult to determine. Based on the record that is
closer to the actual event, the above table would be the most accurate.

It has also been reported that all the Hayes males, with the exception of Patrick Hayes
died before Mary Ellen Casey came to Chicago. The 1900 U.S. Federal Census reports
the following names living at 3358 Wood Street, Chicago, Cook County, Illinois:

  • Michael Walsh
  • Mary Hayes
  • Maggie Walsh
  • Patrick Hayes
  • Frances Walsh
  • Nellie Hayes
  • Mary Irene Walsh
  • Mary Hayes Lawson
  • John J. Walsh
  • George Lawson.

There is a death record for Thomas Hayes, date of death listed as 09 Apr 1896, living at
3358 Wood Street, Chicago, Illinois. This is the address given for Michael Walsh in the
1900 U.S. Census. In addition, a James Hayes is documented as a witness to the marriage
of Mary (Mim) Hayes and George Lawson, which took place at St. Agnes Church,
Chicago, Illinois on 04 Oct 1899.  James Hayes is also recorded as a sponsor at the baptism
of Mary Irene Walsh (daughter of Michael Walsh and Margaret Hayes), also at St. Agnes
Church, on 31 Mar 1895.

The recorded year of immigration to the United States from Canada for all the above, with
the exception of Frances, Mary Irene, John J. , and George Lawson is 1893. This date is
recorded in the 1900 U.S. Federal Census for Michael Walsh. However, this date is
contradicted by the documented year of birth of Frances Walsh (daughter of Michael Walsh
and Margaret Hayes). Based on her marriage record, documented in the St. Agnes parish
register (Chicago), her date of birth is recorded as 22 Sep 1892.

After they settled in Chicago Mary Ellen opened another grocery store and later a tavern.
For a time Michael Walsh ran and operated the tavern while looking for work as a
goldsmith and the daughters prepared the meals for the free lunch. It's reported that the
grocery store and the tavern got to be to much work, and Mary Ellen sold them. The time
period when she sold the buildings is not known. It may have been after the death of
Patrick Hayes in 1914 or after the death of Michael Walsh in 1915.

She then bought two houses. One house was given to her daughter Ellen (Nellie) Hayes
and the other house was given to her daughter Margaret. It has also been reported by
Mrs. Helen Casey of Chicago, in June of 1993 (daughter of Mary (Mim) Hayes and George
Lawson) that Mary Ellen was married twice. The second husband was a man by the name
of "Mr. Barry",actual spelling is unknown. It was reported that she married Mr. Barry in
Chicago (date unknown) and they were married for about 1 year before his death. None
of the children liked him and after his death none of the children talked about
him.  Mary Ellen Casey Hayes is reported as having again used her married name of Hayes
after "Mr. Barry's" death.

See Hayes & Walsh Family Photo taken in Chicago about 1900-1901

Two children of Mary Ellen's, Nellie and Patrick Hayes, are listed in the 1910 U.S. Federal
Census. In addition, Mary Hayes is listed as living with her son Patrick in April of 1910.
The year of death for Patrick Hayes was given as 1914. However, there is no record of
death for a Patrick Hayes in Chicago during this year, or at any of the addresses given.
Mary Ellen (Casey) Hayes died on 21 Aug 1926. At the time of her death she was living at
6101 S. Mozart St., Chicago, Illinois. She is buried at Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Chicago, Illinois.
The Certificate of Death documents her father and mother as Timothy Casey and Margaret
Murphy. It also documents her date of birth as "About 1856", and age "About 70".

The place of birth listed for Mary Ellen and both her parents is County Limerick, Ireland.
The recorded length of residence in the United States is listed as "About 35 years". This
would mean they immigrated to the U.S. about 1891. It is worth noting that the baptism
record for John J. Hayes, born 1877, documents his godmother as Bridget Hayes. Bridget
Hayes is possibly the mother or an unmarried sister of John Hayes Sr. or the wife of a
brother of John Hayes Sr. The baptism certificate for Anne Hayes, born 1870, documents
her godmother and godfather as Mary and Thomas Hayes. Again, this could be the father
and mother of John Hayes or his brother and wife.

The Canadian Dominion Directory; 1871

It has not been determined if the above names are related to the Hayes family.
The names are referenced here for future reference in order to identify other members
in the Hayes family. There are many other Hayes's listed in these directories. The names
that are listed here have similar addresses and names to the Hayes family in question.
There is a strong possibility that some of the names are related.
