The birth record for John J. Walsh records Michael's occupation as Goldsmith. The 1900 census records his occupation as Laborer.

Michael Walsh is again found in the 1910 U.S. Federal Census. His occupation is listed as a Smelter at a steel mill. This Census record also lists the place of birth for Michael Walsh as Ireland. The death record for Michael Walsh, presumably filled out by his wife Margaret, documents his place of birth as Ireland, and his occupation as Watchman and Laborer.  In addition, his father is listed as John Walsh, and his mother's name is listed as Fransis Carney.

The 1901 Chicago City Directory lists a Michael Walsh living at 3358 Wood Street, occupation; Saloon Keeper.

It is also noted that Michael Walsh worked for a time as a saloon keeper while he was looking for work as a goldsmith. The saloon was owned by Mary Ellen Casey Hayes, mother of Margaret Hayes, Michael 's wife. This saloon was located in the area of 33rd and Ashland in Chicago. It is not known if Michael ever found work in Chicago as a goldsmith.

Based on the 1900 and 1910 U.S. Census, Michael and Margaret immigrated to Chicago, Illinois from Toronto, Canada, about 1893. However, this date is contradicted by the birth date of Frances Walsh, which is documented in her marriage record as 22 September 1892.
